South Korean electronics giant LG has settled a class-action lawsuit filed against it over allegedly defective refrigerator compressors, according to a report from Consumer Reports.
The lawsuit was filed in 2019 by consumers who claimed that certain LG refrigerators were equipped with compressors that were prone to failure. According to the complaint, the faulty compressors caused the refrigerators to stop cooling properly and eventually fail altogether, resulting in spoiled food and other damages.
The settlement agreement, which is still pending court approval, would reportedly provide cash payments to consumers who purchased certain LG refrigerators between 2014 and 2017 and experienced compressor failures. The amount of the payments has not been disclosed.
LG denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement, but agreed to provide certain benefits to affected consumers. These benefits may include free repairs, replacement refrigerators, or reimbursement for out-of-pocket repair costs.
The settlement also includes provisions for consumers who purchased extended warranties or service contracts to receive partial refunds, as well as for LG to improve its customer service procedures.
This is not the first time LG has faced legal action over its refrigerator compressors. In 2020, the company settled a similar class-action lawsuit in New Jersey for $4.5 million.
If the settlement agreement is approved, affected consumers will receive notice of their eligibility for benefits and instructions on how to claim them.
